Artist's Description

Once again I read "Moby Dick" and once again I became interested in the history of whaling. For this painting I used a historic photograph of New Bedford, Massachusettes. I believe it dates to about 1850 when whale oil was used to light the world, petroleum had not yet been discovered in Pennsylvania (1859), and the exploding grenade harpoon had not yet been invented (1868).

Bill Hudson

Bill Hudson comes from a family of watermen who worked the Chesapeake and Chincoteague Bays in Virginia. His inherited love of the sea is evident in his watercolors. Having an aptitude for art as well as science and mathematics, Bill graduated with a Bachelor of Science in Mechanical Engineering from Drexel University in Philadelphia. He then pursued a 38-year career in aerospace while painting with oils and watercolors as a hobby. His proudest moments came, however, when he married his wife Ellie and they were blessed with eight children. Now retired and with the children grown, Bill is enjoying a second career as a maritime artist. �For me there has always been that attraction to the shore. It is a world different from the...
