Description
Assateague Island, which sits just off the Eastern Shore of the Virginia-Maryland border, is most famous for its wild ponies and lighthouse. Over 300 wild ponies have lived there for hundreds of years. Their population is maintained by the annual "Pony Penning" swim and auction held since 1925 by the Chincoteague Volunteer Fire Department. When I was a kid, my friend George Taylor got one of those auctioned ponies for $50 in 1954. Today about 75 ponies are auctioned for prices ranging from $500 to $12,000.
